Android 13 may make it easier to switch eSIM profiles
Replacing eSIM on Android has been a complicated process but that could change in the near future if the beta version works out.
The era of SIM-less phones is slowly coming and Apple has started the exercise with its SIM-free iPhone 14 models in select countries this year. While Android phones continue to struggle to replace the eSIM, making it imperative that people have the dual option of a physical and an eSIM.
But that could soon change with possible improvements coming in Android 13 in the near future. According to new reports, the QPR2 beta release of Android 13 is making it easier to switch eSIM profiles and even transfer digital accounts from one device to another.
If eSIM is supposed to be the answer to replacing SIM slots, it’s important that Android is proactive and smart with managing the electronic version, and it’s good to see Android 13 taking some action in that direction.
Global studies have shown us that the industry sees eSIM as a billion-dollar opportunity and with Apple taking the first step, it is high time that Android also turns some attention towards the technology.
Granted, operators need to be equally efficient with their processes, but they also need the platform to be intuitive enough to make the switch faster. See how eSIM activation is smooth for iPhone users, while those with Android phones have to contend with multiple steps that create friction in the system that is avoidable.
If Android 13 gets the new support, expect future Android versions to make the process better and faster. For the QPR2 beta, it is likely that Google will limit its use case to Pixel and other Google Mobile Services (GMS) devices. But ultimately, make it available to a wider base of audience.
