Mumbai: Police on Tuesday arrested a 24-year-old man from Nalasopara within 24 hours after he barged into a medical shop. Andheri (East) Using a duplicate key, stole one lakh rupees cash kept in the locker on the night of 5 December.
A white T-shirt and mask-covered face captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) led the Andheri police to the accused, identified as Ajay Gupta, and managed to recover Rs 61,000 in cash.
Gupta was working Vora Medicals Before leaving the job three years ago. Owner of Vora Medical, Mukesh Vora (59) lodged a complaint on Monday morning when he saw money missing from the locker of the shop. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone X) Maheshwar Reddy Gupta said that after leaving the job, Gupta did not hand over the duplicate keys of the ship. “He is looking for an opportunity to steal by using a duplicate key as he was aware of the daily collection and the cash kept in the shop,” Reddy said.
Gupta entered the shop at around 11 pm with a duplicate key.
“When he opened the shop, no one suspected him. The theft happened in a busy street where the shop is located. When he came out of the shop after stealing, he had covered his face. Several CCTV grabs helped us track down Gupta. He claimed that when he caught the original key while cleaning the shop, he made a duplicate key,” said Andheri police sub-inspector Digamber Pagar,
