Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Dr Jitendra Kumar, a faculty member of the university’s medical school, has been suspended for hurting religious sentiments. A show cause notice has also been issued to the professor. The professor reportedly showed the class a slideshow in which he made a “mythological reference to rape”.
The professor reportedly taught about rape in India and its historical and religious context during one of his classes. One of the slides during the lecture talked about Brahma’s impersonation of his daughter, Indra’s sage Gautam, and his wife, Tulsi Vivah: the story of Lord Vishnu raping the wife of King Jalandhar. It also talked about the Nirbhaya rape, Mathura rape case and different types of marriages as per Hindu traditions.
Several students have taken to social media platforms to condemn the content of the lecture. After much uproar, the AMU administration and medical faculty have “strongly condemned” the contents of the slide in an official statement and issued a show-cause notice to Dr. Jitendra Kumar. Claiming that the slide has hurt the religious sentiments of the students, staff. , and the civic professor has been given 24 hours to respond.
The accused, assistant professor, department of forensic science, has tendered an unconditional apology on the issue and said that it was a mistake on his part and also assured that such lapse will not happen again in future.
The university has also constituted a two-member inquiry committee to take steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen again. Dr. Jitendra Kumar has tendered an unconditional apology.

Meanwhile, recently a professor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) had imposed upon himself Image on a painting of Hindu god Rama. He replaced the image of the Hindu goddess Sita in the painting with an image of his wife and displayed it in an exhibition at the university.
