Amrita Khanvilkar: I would love to do what Konkona Sensharma or Sanya Malhotra do in Bollywood

Amrita Khanvilkar, who has been working in Marathi and Hindi films for more than 15 years, has expressed her desire to work in films like Paglat and Geely Pachchi. Amrita Konkona is heavily influenced by Sensharma and Sanya Malhotra, whom she calls her “favourite actresses”.

“I would love to do what Konkona Sensharma or Shefali Shah or Sanya Malhotra does. She is one of my favorite actresses and it would be amazing to do something like her. I used to love puglite. It was wonderful. Amrita, who has delivered hits like Raazi, Satyamev Jayate and Malang, says, “I can’t express how good an idea it was.”

Amrita is currently receiving positive response for her recently released Marathi film Pondicherry, which also stars Sai Tamhankar, Vaibhav Tatvawadi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Neena Kulkarni, Gaurav Ghatnekar and Tanmay Kulkarni. The film is directed by National Award winning filmmaker Sachin Kundalkar.

Talking about the film, Amrita says, “It is completely shot on a smartphone and it was a cast and crew of only 15 people. We shot this film in about 28 days. Apart from the script, All these things were a challenge for the actors as we were not given any help, vanity or anything and we had to do our hair and makeup ourselves. It is very encouraging for Sachin Kundalkar to do something like this and imagine something like this. Looks like and then actors like Sai, Vaibhav, Neena and I become a part of it. That’s why I had to do this film. And then Pondicherry place, it’s rich in so many cultures. There’s South Indian culture, there’s French culture and I’m into that. Never went to the place and that’s how I came on board. Obviously, Sachin had seen ‘Raazi’ and he was like, ‘Amrita, I really want to work with you.'”

Pondicherry, which released in theaters on February 25, follows Nikita (Sai) and their eight-year-old son, Ishaan, who live in an old family villa in Pondicherry, where Nikita runs a home-stay for travelers . A mysterious man with an agenda arrives at Nikita’s home-stay, which gives their entire life an unexpected turn.

Amrita is in the role of a photographer in the film. “Mansi, the character, is very different from who I am. None of her plans come to fruition, so she is very confused and is dealing with her own problems and other personal issues,” she says.

Over the years, Marathi cinema has produced many path-breaking films including Sairat, Natsamrat, Jun, Gulabjam and Faster Phenye. Amrita feels Marathi cinema has a lot of potential but it needs more exposure and budget.

“I feel the budget given to Marathi filmmakers is very less. We need a budget and we need people who bet a lot on Marathi films to do justice to the kind of films we want to make. The content in Marathi was always great, the actors in Marathi are always great. That’s it – budget and exposure,” adds Amrita.
