Amjad Ali Khan Birthday: 11 Lesser Known Facts About the Eminent Sarod Player

Master Sarod player, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is a world renowned musician. Hailing from Gwalior, he was born on October 9, 1945, into a family of musicians who are said to have invented the ‘sarod’. He is the sixth generation sarod player in his illustrious family. The eminent musician is entering his 76th year today. On the special occasion of his birthday, we bring you some lesser known facts about the maestro:

The US state named a day after Amjad Ali Khan on 20 April 1984. It is called Amjad Ali Khan Day.

Master on Masters is a book written by him in which he talks about 12 famous musicians.

He was the Indian delegate to the first World Art Summit in Venice in 1991, followed by Houston, Texas, Nashville and Tennessee making the sarod virtuoso and musician an honorary citizen in 1997. Amjad Khan was given this honor once again in 2007. by Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The great artist got to learn sarod at a very young age from his father Hafiz Ali Khan, who was taught music by the descendants of Tansen.

Amjad Khan gave his first singing at the age of 6; And Masoom Ali Khan is his birth name which was changed by a sadhu.

In 1990, a documentary was made on him by renowned writer-director Gulzar. Its name was ‘Ustad Amjad Ali Khan’.

In India, he has been honored with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, Banga Bibhushan Samman, and the 21st Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavna Award.

Mohammad Hashmi Khan Bangash, Amjad Khan’s great-grandfather, brought India from Afghanistan. Then it was his descendant Ghulam Ali Khan Bangus who converted Rub to Sarod.

Amjad’s second wife Shubhalakshmi Barua is a Bharatanatyam dancer.

They have two sons- Aman Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash who are carrying forward the legacy of the master musician. On Amjad Khan’s 75th birthday, his 2 grandchildren, Zohan Ali Bangash and Abir Ali Bangash (Ayaan Ali’s twins) paid tribute to their grandfather by making a beautiful arrangement, which was made by Amjad Khan himself.

He performed Raga for Peace during the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo.
