Amidst tussle with Centre, Twitter India appoints Vinay Prakash as Resident Grievance Officer

New Delhi: According to the company’s website, Twitter India has appointed Vinay Prakash as its Resident Grievance Officer (RGO) for India, after a prolonged conflict with the Indian government.

The US-based company is in the eye of a storm in India over its alleged failure to comply with new IT regulations that, among other requirements, mandate the appointment of three key personnel – chief compliance officer, nodal officer and grievance officer. Notably, Twitter’s interim resident grievance officer for India Dharmendra Chatur had stepped down in June, leaving the micro-blogging site without a grievance officer as per the new rules.

Prakash’s name comes with Jeremy Kessel, director of global legal policy based in the US.

On Thursday, the Delhi High Court said that the central government can initiate action against Twitter in case of non-compliance as per the new IT rules, even though the micro-blogging site presented a timeline on the appointment process of officers, while it was Maintaining is mandatory. The company further said that it has appointed a resident of India as its interim compliance officer, effective July 6, and informed the Ministry of Information Technology about the development.
