Citizens of Indian Origin (NRIs) living in the US are at the top in terms of domestic violence and assault on wives. This has been revealed on the basis of a complaint that came to the Government of India. In the last 7 years, about 615 complaints of NRIs living in America have come to the central government.
According to information received from RTI, about 2,156 cases of NRI husbands abandoning, beating and beating their wives have been reported in the country in the last seven years. The United Arab Emirates (586) is followed by the United States at number two and Singapore (237) is at number three. In response to the RTI query of Govindan Nampoothiri, a social worker from Kerala, the central government said that most of the cases registered are of abandonment of wives and disappearance of husbands.
About 65 lakh rupees spent on migrant welfare
Responding to RTI, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that about 65 lakh rupees have been spent on migrants from the account of Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF). At the same time, the government said that no compensation has been given to women abandoned by NRI husbands.
What is the law regarding NRI marriage in India
According to ‘The Registration of Marriage of Non Resident Indians 2019’, the NRI husband has to get registered within 30 days of getting married. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of the passport by the Government of India. On the other hand, women marrying NRIs have been given many other rights including Right to Equity by the government.
Laws have been made in India regarding marriage to NRIs.
Where can harassed women complain
According to a BBC report, women harassed by NRI husbands can complain to the National Commission for Women. Here the police and the Ministry of External Affairs are immediately contacted on the complaint. At the same time, women can register their complaint by visiting the MADAD portal of the Ministry of External Affairs.
