Amazon on Wednesday unveiled its first fully autonomous mobile robot called Proteus that autonomously walks through facilities using advanced safety, perception and navigation technology developed by the company. The robot was built to automatically do its job and direct employees to move around and does not need to be confined to restricted areas.
“It can work in a way that enhances simple, secure interactions between technology and people, such as lifting and moving Gokarts, the non-automated, wheeled transportation that travels through our facilities,” Amazon said in a statement. Used to transfer packages from
The Proteus will initially be deployed in outbound Gokart handling areas at Amazon’s fulfillment centers and sort centers. It aims to automate Gokart handling across the network, which will help reduce the need for people to manually move heavy items.
Amazon has more than 520,000 robotic drive units, and has added more than a million jobs worldwide. Amazon will also add Cardinal, a robotic arm capable of lifting weights up to 50 pounds. The company aims to deploy the robotic arms to its warehouses sometime next year.
