Amazon Prime, Sony may jointly bid for IPL broadcast rights: Report

The BCCI is hoping to hold an auction for the broadcast rights of the world’s richest cricket league in December.

Star India acquired the broadcasting rights for the 2018-22 period, ending the 10-year rule of Sony, which previously held the rights from 2008 to 2017. Sony had reportedly placed a bid of Rs 11,050, while Star’s winning bid was Rs 16,348.

According to a report in Hindu Business Line, Sony is hoping to bring Amazon Prime on board and partner up to compete with Star India, which has a strong presence in both the linear TV and digital streaming space (Disney + Hotstar).

“Prime Video has been looking to enter this space for a long time and Sony wants to win back the rights. It looks like the two may join hands for this,” the report quoted a source as saying.

The BCCI is expected to sell the broadcasting rights for at least $5 billion.

In October, the BCCI added two more teams to the IPL, officially expanding it to 10 teams. Sanjeev Goenka’s RPSG made a successful bid for the Lucknow franchise (Rs 7090 crore), while CVC Capital will own the Ahmedabad-based team (Rs 5625 crore).

“The new franchise will participate in the IPL from the 2022 season, subject to the bidders completing the post-bid formalities specified in the ITT document. The IPL 2022 season will consist of ten teams and will consist of 74 matches, with each team playing 7 home and 7 away matches,” the BCCI said in a release.

A big auction is expected before next season, with the major stars up for grabs.
