Amazon is reportedly developing a smart fridge under the codename ‘Project Pulse’

Amazon is reportedly working on a smart refrigerator that can track stored food and make it easier to order items through the company’s ecosystem. To turn this idea into a reality, the e-commerce giant apparently plans to leverage some of the technology it already uses in its Amazon Go cashierless stores.

Is there anything that “smart” isn’t ready to be? From watches and glasses to bath mats and refrigerators… in fact, according to BusinessInsider sources, Amazon is working on a smart fridge capable of tracking the food stored inside and quickly reordering when stocks run out. Its code name is Project Pulse.

The idea of a smart refrigerator is certainly not new, as Samsung already has one on the market. But Samsung’s version doesn’t benefit from one major asset: heroinecomprehensive ecosystem.

Project Pulse is being built by the same team as Amazon Go, the US giant’s autonomous, cashierless supermarket chain. According to reports, over $50 million per year is being dedicated to the development of the project, which has been going on for a little over two years now. To make the fridge smart, the device will have multiple cameras which, thanks to computer recognition technology, will be able to track what is stored inside. However, it is not yet clear whether the item can be shipped and billed directly from the user’s Amazon account.

Finding new ways in consumers’ daily lives

The proposed technology could allow the device to monitor a user’s shopping habits and make suggestions, again raising questions about Amazon’s impact on our consumption habits. Notifications are then sent to inform the user about the missing products. Another possible use is that the refrigerator may suggest recipes using ingredients with upcoming expiration dates to help reduce food waste. Meanwhile, orders can be placed directly from Whole Foods, an Amazon-owned company specializing in the sale of organic products.

According to BusinessInsider, Amazon does not intend to manufacture these refrigerators itself, but is instead looking for a partner. With regards to price, there is no doubt that this fridge will be expensive, primarily targeting high-income households and users increasingly adopting the lifestyle of the future. Of course, if and when the fridge hits the market, prices will eventually drop.

However, note that Amazon hasn’t announced anything officially about this project. In other words, it can be canceled at any time if it is too complicated to set up or too expensive for consumers. Still, there’s no doubt that Amazon continues to track our consumption habits and figure out ways to get closer and closer to our customers, essentially tying them into the Amazon ecosystem.
