Amazon, Google and other big tech firms will face another antitrust bill

A bipartisan group of lawmakers, headed by Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat and Republican Chuck Grassley, is planning to introduce a bill that would block Big Tech platforms like Amazon and Alphabet’s Google in favor of their products and services. The bill is one of a slew introduced in this Congress that aims to rein in tech firms, including industry leaders Facebook and Apple. No legislation has been enacted thus far, although one, a comprehensive measure to increase resources for antitrust promoters, has passed the Senate.

The bill, which Klobuchar’s office has said will be introduced early next week, will be a companion to a measure that has passed the House Judiciary Committee. It has to pass through both houses of Congress to become law. Klobuchar and Grassley’s bill would specifically prohibit the platform from requiring companies operating on its sites to purchase the platform’s goods or services and from biasing search results in favor of the platform.

“As the leading digital platform – some of the biggest companies our world has seen – increasingly prioritize their products and services, we need to create policies to ensure small businesses and entrepreneurs still have the opportunity to succeed in the digital marketplace. should,” Klobuchar said in a statement.

Klobuchar is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s antitrust subcommittee, while Grassley is the top Republican on the full committee. Co-sponsors include Senator Dick Durbin, the chair of the full Judiciary Committee, Richard Blumenthal and Corey Booker, as well as Democrats such as Republicans Lindsey Graham, John Kennedy and Cynthia Loomis.
