Chandigarh: Taking a jibe at Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as chief minister, Haryana Home Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Anil Vij on Saturday said the script was written on the same day. Cricketer turned politician. Entered the grand old party because wherever the “saints” went, destruction ensued.
“Captain Amarinder Singh has resigned as the Chief Minister of Punjab. Its script was written on the day Navjot Singh Sidhu came to Congress, because wherever the ‘saints’ went, there was devastation.”
Earlier in the day, Singh submitted his resignation to Governor Banwarilal Purohit at the Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh.
Soon after submitting his resignation, Singh spoke to the media outside the Raj Bhavan and said that he had earlier spoken to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and informed her about his decision to resign as the chief minister.
“This is the third time in two months that this has happened. He called MLAs to Delhi twice and now it is CLP meeting. I feel humiliated myself and hence I have decided to step down as CM. They (party high command) can appoint someone they trust.
“I have resigned from the post of Chief Minister. Politics is always an option in the future. I will use this option when I get a chance to do so,” he said while commenting on his future plans.
Meanwhile, Punjab Congress MLAs have authorized the party president to elect a new CLP leader.
This was one of the resolutions passed unanimously in the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting in Chandigarh.
A second resolution appreciating and thanking Amarinder Singh for his contribution to Punjab and Congress was also passed unanimously in the meeting, PTI reported.
