‘Am I their bonded labour?’: Mamata Banerjee to not attend Netaji statue event in Delhi | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that she will not be attend the inauguration ceremony of a Netaji statue in Delhi and claimed that she did not receive a “proper” invitation.
“I received a letter from an undersecretary stating PM will inaugurate the statue today and you be there before the event commences. Am I their bonded labour?”, said Mamata while addressing a rally in Kolkata.
Countering Mamata’s charge, BJP‘s IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya said that Mamata did nothing to honour Netaji’s legacy.

“Mamata Banerjee is feeling bad that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s statue is being installed in the heart of Delhi. She did nothing to honour his legacy and now that Prime Minister Modi has taken the historic decision, she is making puerile attempts to sully the solemn occasion,” he said.
Mamata also said that this is the first time that the Bangladesh PM came to India and did not come to Bengal despite Sheikh Hasina’s desire to meet her.

“I don’t know why BJP is so angry. They also didn’t let me go to many places including Chicago and China to attend events,” Bengal CM said.
Meanwhile, the government issued a statement saying that it does not invite any Chief Ministers for such visits.
“Government of India does not invite any Chief Ministers for such visits. Sometimes Chief Ministers are invited for State Banquets or some other ceremonial events, but in this visit, there was no such occasion,” government sources said.
“In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in fact invited (West Bengal) Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to Bangladesh, where a ceremonial event was held for flagging-off a bus service between the two countries,” an official said.
The reaction came after Banerjee slammed the Centre for not inviting her to be a part of Hasina’s visit to India. She said she was curious over why the BJP-led government was “worried” about her meeting Hasina.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil a grand statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose near India Gate in the national capital on Thursday.
