‘Always wanted to play Test cricket since I was a little girl’: South Africa debutante enjoying red-ball cricket

Charismatic South African batsman Laura Wolvaardt has said the recent one-off Test against England women was a “great learning experience” and she will use the lessons learned from the game when the white-ball series against the hosts kicks off on 11 July. Will start with ODI match. ,

The 23-year-old made his Test debut against England but was unlucky to be dismissed cheaply in both innings by England pacer Issie Wong, even as the Marijne Cup took two to save the day for the Proteas. Scored 150 and 43 not out in innings. Rain affected match.

Wolvaardt was one of nine South Africa players to earn their maiden Test cap during a four-day clash at Taunton last month, with the right-handed batsman contributing scores of 16 in both innings.

And while Wolvaardt preferred to score more runs with the bat, he said it was still a great experience to be able to represent his country in red-ball cricket against a tough England team.

“It was an incredible week,” the ICC quoted Wolvaardt as saying on Monday. “Test cricket is something that I have always wanted to play since I was a little girl, so it was a great experience to be able to do that and debut with the whole team.

“It was really tough, from a cricket point of view. It was very tough to face the red ball and I had some challenging innings in front of me. Overall, it was a great learning experience, I will learn a lot going forward and hopefully this is the first of many.

Wolvaardt’s focus is now on white-ball cricket, with the tourists facing England in three ODIs and three T20Is. The matches will play an important build-up towards the ICC T20 World The cup in South Africa next year is likely to be one of the favorites for both the teams to claim the trophy.

Wolvaardt wants to use the recent Test match as a learning experience and return to the scoring method in the limited overs game.

“For me, the Test was just about making sure my technique is right and try and get in a strong position. The basics will remain the same for ODIs, so it will be really cool as I have done a little technical work for the ODI series now, so hopefully I will be able to time the ball well. he said.

“Overall, facing our bowlers in tough conditions (when given a chance), all this will help in the ODI series. Hopefully now with the white ball it will be a little easier. So fingers crossed.

“We are very excited to go into the ODI series. We had mixed results against him this year; We won the first game (in the World Cup) and then lost the semi-finals very disappointingly, it was very exciting to go up against them.

“We have a very exciting ODI team and it’s a format that our team enjoys and are very good at, so hopefully we can give them a little run for their money.”
