Zubair was taken back to Tihar Jail where he has been kept after his arrest on June 27 in another case of hurting religious sentiments.

A court here on Thursday granted the custody of Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair to the UP Police till July 14. Zubair was brought here from Delhi’s Tihar Jail amid tight security on Thursday afternoon. Delhi Police brought Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair to Sitapur in connection with a case registered against him at Khairabad police station for hurting religious sentiments through a tweet.

Earlier, he was brought on July 4 and the court sent Zubair to 14-day judicial custody. Zubair was taken back to Tihar Jail where he has been kept after his arrest on June 27 in another case of hurting religious sentiments.

Zubair’s lawyer Mukul Mishra told media persons that while he was in custody under Section 295A of the IPC and Section 66 of the IT Act, the police today added Section 153A of the IPC when his bail case came up for hearing. The police later gave another application seeking remand, claiming that the mobile phone he used to make the purported tweet was still in Bengaluru, Mishra said.

Arguments were heard on police remand and his bail application was rejected. Mishra said the court has granted his custody to the state police from July 8 to 14. Sources said Zubair may be taken to Bengaluru for recovery of the mobile and hard disk used for spreading the alleged hate tweets.
