CHENNAI: Following the controversy over the closure of m philo by degree Madras University, the Tamil Nadu The government on Thursday announced that all state universities will offer M Phil degree programs for 2021-22.
Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi told reporters after a meeting, “The University of Madras has recently discontinued the M Phil degree. Though there are two opinions about the need for M Phil course, we have introduced M Phil course in all the universities. have decided to continue.” Vice-Chancellors of State Universities in Chennai on Thursday.
Madras University discontinued the M Phil degree due to poor enrollment. Officials said pre-research degrees have lost their luster University Grants Commission (UGC) made PhD, NET and SLET as minimum qualifications for faculty members in colleges and universities.
However, a section of academicians said that the abolition of M Phil degree was part of the National Education Policy 2020 and the university was implementing the NEP when the state government did not accept it.
The minister said that all state universities will start UG admissions from August 1 on the basis of class 12th marks as announced earlier. “We have directed the state universities to declare the exam results before admission,” he said.
He further said that this year also online engineering counseling will be conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE).
“All state universities should follow similar procedures for appointment of professors, controllers of examinations and registrars. They have been asked to ensure transparency in the recruitment process,” the minister said.
