D-day has finally arrived for owners of the legacy blue check mark on Twitter and the micro-blogging platform was all set to remove all blue badges in one go on Thursday.

According to its CEO Elon Musk, it is “shaping up to be quite the day!”

Twitter announced that on April 20, “we are removing the legacy verified checkmark”.

“To stay verified on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue. Organizations can sign up for Verified Organizations,” the company said.

Twitter Blue will cost Rs 9,400 per year (or Rs 900 per month) in India for individual users.

Musk announced that users could also get Blue Verified for $7 per month if they signed up via a web browser.

In its earlier attempt to delete legacy accounts with blue check marks, the company apparently did not have the backend technology to simultaneously delete around 4.2 lakh legacy accounts with blue ticks.

According to The Washington Post, there were technical challenges to rapidly mass-removing so-called blue ticks and currently the only way to do it was through a manual approach.

Musk had previously given an April 1 deadline to remove all legacy accounts with Blue Verification. The company has so far only removed the blue tick for The New York Times.

Twitter is reportedly planning to give a free $1,000 checkmark to the top 10,000 organizations based on follower count.
