All eyes on defending champions Bangladesh in Group A of ICC Under 19 World Cup

West Indies will host the ICC Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup for the first time in 2022 and Group A will take a first look at the defending champions.

Bangladesh surprised two years ago in South Africa as the likes of Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shorful Islam – both sides claimed historic Test victories for the senior team in New Zealand this month – won the title.

They face England, along with Canada and the United Arab Emirates, to claim a second title after the one they won back in 1998.

All games will take place in St Kitts and Nevis, which previously hosted games at the 2007 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Bangladesh (13th appearance)

In the last eight editions of the ICC U19 Men’s CWC, Bangladesh have reached the first round on six occasions, culminating in a memorable overall win over South Africa two years ago.

On that occasion, he defeated India in the final, the team that has given him the most problems at the Under-19 level.

Before 2020, his previous best performance came in 2016 when the team, captained by Mehdi Hassan Miraj, finished third on home soil.

Leading the side this time is Rakibul Hasan, who is part of the winning side in South Africa and the left-arm spinner will be crucial to building the team on a strong recent record.

Canada (8th appearance)

Canada heads to the West Indies to participate in the fifth consecutive ICC U19 Men’s CWC, and eighth overall.

North Americans will be hoping to improve on the previous best result of 11th place, which came in 2010.

They have never made it past the first round and into the quarter-finals, and will be up against it here with defending champions Bangladesh and England in the group.

Captain Mihir Patel was part of the squad in South Africa, scoring 90 in a first-round loss against Group A teammates UAE, which was later avenged in the play-offs.

England (14th appearance)

It is now 24 years since England’s only ICC U19 Men’s CWC win, but the team advanced to the semi-finals on their way to third place in 2014.

Last time around, England failed to exit the first round, being eliminated in the play-offs with three wins before going to ninth place in a group featuring Australia and the West Indies.

This year, Hampshire batsman and captain Tom Purst will expect a strong showing for the team coached by Richard Dawson in a completely new form.

The squad also includes Barbados-born spinner Jacob Bethel, who will be expected to impress upon his return to the Caribbean, as well as fellow spinner Archie Lenham, who made a regular appearance for Sussex in all three formats in 2021 at the age of just 17. Exhibited.

United Arab Emirates (3rd appearance)

The United Arab Emirates has qualified for the ICC U19 Men’s CWC for the second edition, and third overall, hosting the event in 2014.

Last time around, the United Arab Emirates outperformed Canada in the first round, but then fell to the same opponent in the 13th-place play-off, so they would be a familiar rival.

Full international Alishan Sharafu, a batting all-rounder, will captain the team, who was part of the team two years ago.

He has since gone on to represent the United Arab Emirates at T20I and ODI level and will bring in considerable experience as one of two comeback players, along with 17-year-old wicketkeeper and opener Kai Smith, who is just 15 years old. Why was it? He played in this event in South Africa.
