Akshay Kumar on bellbottom theatrical release despite theaters still shut in Maharashtra: It’s a gamble

Akshay Kumar Says he is “definitely feeling the pressure” to be first Bollywood The actor whose upcoming film Bellbottom is heading towards a theatrical release amid the COVID-19 pandemic despite theaters not opening everywhere. While cinema halls in Delhi are currently operating at less than 50 per cent numbers, cinema halls in Maharashtra will remain closed as the state government on Monday issued its new revised COVID-19 guidelines.

Asked how the actor is looking at the business of Bellbottom, which releases in theaters on August 19, the actor said, “It’s a gamble. Kisoi ko to karna hi tha. We have taken this leap of faith. And we are very confident that the film will work. This is something we believe in. I am sure that people are going to come to the theaters in Delhi despite 50% occupancy in other states. Also, it will take a while for the film to release. There are still 16-17 days left, so we are keeping our fingers crossed, you never know.”

“It’s definitely a risk but what’s the point if you don’t take risk in life. My creator was with me throughout this journey so we have gone with it.”

The actor was speaking at the trailer launch of Bellbottom at a theater in New Delhi. The film was supposed to hit the theaters on July 27, but was pushed back due to the closure of most cinemas across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elaborating on the team’s decision to release the film amid the pandemic and the closure of cinemas in Maharashtra, producer Jackky Bhagnani said, “I was not worried. Of course, Maharashtra contributes around 30 per cent, but I think we are happy with Akshay sir’s leadership for Bellbottom. We are happy to be flag bearers. It’s for the fraternity and that’s the most important thing. Yes, business is important but for this film in particular, I think the biggest box office is that we are coming to the theatres.”

Bellbottom is directed by Ranjit M Tiwari and also stars Vaani Kapoor, Lara Dutta and Huma Qureshi. This will be the first major Hindi film to release theatrically amid the pandemic. Bellbottom was also one of the first films to announce the resumption of shooting in the wake of the coronavirus-induced lockdown, which has suspended production activities across the country.

The film is produced by Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani, Deepshikha Deshmukh, Monisha Advani, Madhu Bhojwani and Nikkhil Advani. Written by Asim Arora and Parvez Shaikh, the film is set in the 1980s and revolves around one of India’s forgotten heroes.

Bellbottom will be released in theaters on August 19 in 2D and 3D formats.
