Samajwadi Party chief and former chief minister of the state Akhilesh Yadav The book ‘Gorakhpur Hospital Tragedy’ written by Dr. Kafeel Khan was released on Saturday. The book was released at a function organized in the presence of senior SP office bearers at SP Headquarters Lucknow. Dr Kafeel Khan, who came into the limelight after the BRD medical incident, had also recently contested the MLC election on an SP ticket.

This book has been written on the death of children in BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur. Talking to the media, Kafeel said, “I have brought to light how exactly there was lack of oxygen. My aim of writing the book is to bring justice to more than 80 children who died due to lack of oxygen.

“I have included all the letters in the book which were saying that there is no shortage of oxygen. A letter was written to the Chief Minister, but no one took cognizance. Instead, I was made an accused and sent to jail. I have also written about how the two systems run inside the jail,” he claimed.

Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College suddenly came into limelight in the year 2017 when 80 children died allegedly due to lack of oxygen. Dr. Kafeel was the ward superintendent at the BRD hospital when the incident took place. After the incident, it was argued on behalf of the company that due to non-payment for the last several months, the supply of oxygen cylinders had to be stopped. In this case, Dr. Kafeel was arrested by UP STF from Lucknow by making him an accused. On the orders of the Yogi government, a case was registered at the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow.

On the occasion of the book launch, SP President Akhilesh Yadav said, ‘Dr. In his book, Kafeel has described the agony and prison torture he had to go through. I met the families of the victims and also helped them. If adequate facilities for the treatment of Japanese fever had been provided at that time, many children would not have died.”
