Akhilesh Yadav accuses BJP of misleading OBCs, demands to increase reservation limit

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday accused the BJP of misleading the OBC community and asked that the reservation limit be raised to 50 per cent and the caste census figures be revised. The former UP chief minister, who was speaking in the Lok Sabha, said that if the 50 per cent limit is not raised, the backward classes will not get their rights.

Participating in the discussion on the Constitution (127th Amendment) Bill, 2021 related to Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Yadav said that when the SP government is formed in Uttar Pradesh, he will conduct a caste census.

He said that the BJP is currently in power because of the votes of backward classes and Dalits but it has misled the communities and created hatred among all castes.

Referring to the last assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav said, “He had put forward some faces and said that the chief minister would be from the OBC community. But when the time came, someone else was given the CM’s chair. If such an important bill is being passed, then the reservation limit should also be increased along with it. Caste census data should also be released.

“Everyone thinks they are more in numbers, but they are being neglected. In such a situation, caste census should be done. Everyone should be given their rights according to their numbers. BJP has misled the most backward, dalits and the country.

The BJP government should not forget that the backward classes gave it a chance to come to power, he said.

“The day the backward and downtrodden go away, you will not know where you will go,” he warned.

Supporting the Constitution Amendment Bill, Yadav thanked the leaders and parties who took forward the social fight. He said that the leaders fought a long battle to bring forward the oppressed people for thousands of years.
