Akhilesh, RLD’s Chaudhary Jayant meet over seat-sharing, strengthen Jat-Muslim alliance in western UP

Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Chaudhary Jayant Singh held an important closed-door meeting in Lucknow late on Thursday night. For more than two hours the leaders discussed and finalized the list of candidates along with the distribution of seats.

According to highly placed sources, SP can give 30 to 32 seats to RLD, out of which SP candidate can be on RLD’s election symbol in five to seven. Along with this, the leaders also talked about strengthening the Jat and Muslim alliance in the western part of the state.

The SP-RLD alliance is expected to get support and votes from the Jat lands. It will be interesting to see which side the voters of the farming sector choose, especially after the Center withdrew three new agriculture laws.

Both the parties had already announced their alliance for the upcoming elections, but the seat sharing was yet to be finalised. Sharing the same picture on Twitter, Akhilesh and Jayant announced the details about their meeting on the microblogging site.

The RLD entered the electoral fray in the 2002 elections in alliance with the BJP. In this election, RLD won 14 seats (2 per cent votes). In 2007, RLD had entered the electoral fray alone. In this election, the party won 10 seats, while their vote share increased to 4 per cent. In the 2012 elections, the RLD entered the electoral fray in alliance with the Congress and won nine seats (2 percent of the vote). In 2017, RLD once again contested alone and won only one seat.
