NEW DELHI: India and Russia will hold high-level inter-governmental discussions on the situation in Afghanistan, the government announced on Tuesday. At the invitation of the National Security Advisor Ajit DovalHis counterpart and Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolay Petrushev will visit India on September 7-8 for the meeting, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
Doval is expected to underline India’s concerns about the activities of Pakistan-based and India-oriented terrorist groups such as Lashkar and Jaish in Afghanistan. India believes that Moscow can play a key role in ensuring that such groups do not use Afghanistan to target other countries in the region.
The consultation is a follow-up to the telephonic conversation between PM Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin on August 24. The two leaders then expressed the view that it was important for the two strategic partners to work together and directed their senior officials to stay in touch on Afghanistan.
Patrushev is also expected to meet Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during the visit.
