Aishwarya Rai Bachchan signs her next international film based on Rabindranath Tagore’s three women. Unique

Ever since she was crowned Miss World in 1994, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been a household name in India. Making her acting debut with Mani Ratnam’s 1997 Tamil film Iruvar, she has represented Indian cinema on global platforms on several occasions.

Aishwarya, who made her international debut with Bride and Prejudice (2004), has signed on to her next international project. She will be seen in an Indo-American project based on Rabindranath Tagore’s book Three Women.

Fusion singer and theater writer-director Ishita Ganguly, who adapted the book into a successful musical theatre, will head the project. The film is also his directorial debut.

Confirming the news, Ganguly tells News18.com, “Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will play the lead protagonist in the film. While the play was called Three Women, we are changing the name and we have titled our film The Letter as the film is based on a letter from Kadambari Devi who was Tagore’s sister-in-law. I am really happy that Aishwarya liked the script and agreed to be a part of my directorial debut.”

Ganguly further says that he has given the story its own spin, “While the musical theater I directed was modeled on the development of two protagonists from Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s novels – Bimala and Charufrom. Life is seen through the eyes of 21st century Kadambari Devi, a Sex and the City-esque character like a ghost. For the film, I have adapted the story in a modern-day context and put it as a mother- Made in the story of the daughter.”

While Ganguly wanted to make the film in Hindi, it was the actor who suggested making it in English, “Aishwarya and I were in discussion before the pandemic happened. I originally wanted to make it as a Hindi film. When he read the script he told me that the film should be in English as he felt that the script flowed only in English. It was his conviction that I decided to make it an Indo-American film.”

Ganguly is currently busy as her play Shakuntala Waite is set to be remade as an Off-Broadway musical in New York City from January 17, 2022. This makes her the first India-based writer-director to discontinue NCPA-production. -Broadway. She plans to start shooting for the film by the middle of next year, “We are in the process of signing other Indian American actors and plan to start shooting for the film in New York by July 2022. Right now we are in the process of finalizing some things.”

Aishwarya recently wrapped up the shooting of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan.
