Air Pollution Update: Delhiites gasp for fresh air as AQI continues in ‘very poor’ category; Strong winds can bring relief

Air Pollution Update: Residents of the national capital are gasping for fresh air as the air quality remained in the “very poor” category on Friday. With an overall air quality index (AQI) of 347, the share of stubble burning in Delhi’s PM2.5 was reported to be just 2% on Thursday.

Strong winds may help clear the air from Sunday and the AQI may touch the “poor” category predicted by the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi.

AQI is between 0-51, air quality is considered satisfactory, and air pollution poses little or no risk from 51-100, air quality is acceptable; However, for some pollutants, there may be a moderate health concern for very few. AQI 101-150 is considered ‘unhealthy’ and members of vulnerable groups may experience health effects. An AQI between 151-200 is considered unhealthy and has an impact on people’s health. An AQI of 201-300 is considered very unhealthy and may begin to affect the health of the entire population. AQI of 300+ is considered dangerous and everyone can experience more serious consequences.

On Friday, Wazirpur recorded the worst AQI of 447 in the hazardous category, followed by Shahdara with an AQI of 424, Sonia Vihar at 360 and NCR- Indirapuram Ghaziabad at 451, followed by Noida with 401, Greater Noida. 394 was recorded. Gurugram on 264.

The Central Forecasting Agency System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) said the contribution of farm fires declined to 2% from 6% on Wednesday. “The AQI is likely to improve but will remain in the same range for the next two days as the transport-level winds are approaching from the east, preventing the upstream infiltration of pollutants. From November 21, surface winds are likely to intensify, resulting in effective dispersal leading to improved air quality,” said Safar. “The effective farm fire count is 773 and its contribution to Delhi’s PM2.5 is negligible,” it added.
