Air India Cabin Crew Caught Smuggling 1.4 Kg of Gold Wrapped Around His Hand in Kochi

According to officials, an Air India cabin crew was caught trying to smuggle around 1,500 grams of gold at the Kochi airport.

Shafi, a resident of Wayanad, was arrested after he was caught with 1,487 grams of gold in his hands. As per ANI report, his shirt sleeve was used as a cover to pass through the green channel

According to today’s gold rate, the 1,487 grams of gold that Shafi tried to smuggle would be worth more than Rs 75 lakh.

Shafi’s photographs show the gold being flattened and placed in a plastic cover, which was then wrapped around her hands.

The Customs Preventive Commissionerate had allegedly received confidential information that Shafi, a cabin crew member on a Bahrain-Kozhikode-Kochi flight, was trying to smuggle gold into the country.

The officials also said that further investigation is underway and Shafi is being questioned by the customs officials.

Gold bars seized in Chennai

Meanwhile, gold bars worth Rs 3.32 crore were seized at the Chennai International Airport. The Customs Department told PTI that two passengers, including a Sri Lankan national, have been arrested in this case.

On specific information, officials on Tuesday intercepted two passengers who arrived in Chennai from Singapore and recovered 68 gold bars weighing 6.8 kg. Principal Commissioner of Customs M Mathew Jolly said the gold was allegedly concealed in their luggage.

The value of gold recovered from them has been estimated at Rs 3.32 crore. Both have been arrested and investigation is on, the official said.
