Ahmedabad University Launches School of Public Health to Foster Better Health Through Education, Research, and Action

Ahmedabad University announced the launch of its School of Public Health with a mission to improve health and environment locally, nationally and globally. The school aims to train leaders who can develop holistic solutions to interdisciplinary problems relevant to the 21st century and educate and inspire individuals, communities and organizations. Kaumudi Joshipura, Doctor of Science in Epidemiology from Harvard University, USA has been named Dean of the School. Kaumudi Joshipura also has two professorships in public health, endowed by Sushmita Bagchi, an Odia writer and chairperson of MoSchool, while Subroto Bagchi, co-founder of Mindtree and chairman of the Odisha Skill Development Authority, has two professorships in public health.

The long-term goal of the School is to develop into a comprehensive globally influential School of Public Health. Early education focuses are planned in environmental health and analytical sciences, including data science, biostatistics and epidemiology, and executive education. The School will provide an unprecedented opportunity for strong interdisciplinary collaborative learning, research and implementation with the driving goal of addressing complex, large-scale societal challenges.

Pankaj Chandra, Vice Chancellor, Ahmedabad University said, “The School of Public Health will promote better health through education and research. The Susmita and Subroto Bagchi Chair Professorship supports our interdisciplinary approach around problem solving and is an important step towards attracting the world’s best minds to our School of Public Health. Through the School, we will plant the seed of teaching and research in one of the most important areas of our time. We will establish a research program around data and evidence in public health. Professor Joshipura has the foresight and strategic plan to build a School of Public Health at the University of Ahmedabad.” Sharing his vision for the school, Professor Kaumudi Joshipura, Dean, School of Public Health, said, “Public health less public India faces many pressing challenges globally with a low priority of awareness and resources. India has made great strides in recent decades, but still needs more trained professionals who can conduct high-quality research and address complex problems. The School of Public Health will build on the holistic approach and interdisciplinary programs of Ahmedabad University, and focus on improving human and planetary health through a number of creative initiatives that integrate research, education and health promotion.

Mr. Subroto Bagchi, Co-Founder, Mindtree and Chairman, Odisha Skill Development Authority said, “Institution building is not an easy task. Ahmedabad University has a startup spirit, and it is a most unusual spirit. The university has taken up a complex issue with the School of Public Health, but it will go a long way. The difficulties that emerged in Covid-19 gave us an opportunity to understand that studying at Ahmedabad University will provide us with a multidimensional solution to these challenges.” Mr. Sanjay Lalbhai, Chancellor, Ahmedabad University said, “When you compare 1.2 billion people What India has and the outlay we are making on health, you realize how inadequate it is. The government is doing a lot but pushing all the problems will not help. Private institutions need to come forward to make a big difference. We know the challenges are immense. How do you effectively provide healthcare to a large population using new technologies? Together with the School of Public Health, we are going to create solutions.
