Two days before the presidential election, the BJP on Saturday put up posters bearing the label of the Chief Minister across West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee as “anti-tribal”. Posters in both Bengali and Hindi claimed that the TMC supremo showed his “anti-tribal mindset” by not supporting NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu, a tribal woman.
The poster has pictures of Murmu with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi To inform the people that she is the NDA candidate for the Presidential election to be held on 18th July. “However, by not supporting a persona who is a tribal woman, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has shown her anti-tribal mindset,” read posters that appeared in Malda, Jhargram and Paschim Medinipur districts.
In a statement of BJP, it has been said that 50 thousand such posters have been put up in the entire state including tribal areas. BJP’s Malda North MP Khagen Murmu said the posters were apt to “expose the true self of the TMC supremo”.
“Draupadi Murmu is a tribal woman who comes from a very poor background, and worked her way up to reach the point where she is currently. His life journey is an inspiring story. By him, Banerjee has shown that he is neither serious about women empowerment nor about tribals,” he said. The TMC, on the other hand, said that Banerjee is committed to the upliftment of tribals and Dalits and does not require a certificate from the BJP. He said, ‘Look at the track record of the BJP, how they have committed atrocities on Dalits, minorities. They are making such absurd allegations… they are losing ground from under their feet in West Bengal,” said TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy.
TMC is backing opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, though Banerjee had earlier said that Murmu could have been the unanimous candidate if the BJP had discussed it with the opposition before fielding him. However, Banerjee said she would vote for the opposition candidate.
