New Delhi: The United Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Friday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement to repeal three controversial agriculture laws and said its future course of action would be decided after the core committee meetings on Saturday and Sunday.

As reported by news agency PTI, the umbrella body of farmer unions wrote in a statement, “We hope that the government will not let its announcement go in vain and will fully meet our demands, including a law guaranteeing MSP.” Won’t move forward.”

Welcoming the central government’s decision to repeal the three laws, the SKM said if the agriculture laws are formally repealed, it will be a “historic victory” for farmers who have struggled for a year. did.

The farmers body also highlighted that “a large number of farmers are being mobilized at protest sites on November 26 to mark the first anniversary of the movement.”

Farmer leader and SKM core committee member Darshan Pal said it was good that the central government had decided to repeal agricultural laws, but sought formal repeal of the laws in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.

The second demand was that the Center come to an agreement on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, he asserted, adding, “We want a legal guarantee on MSP.”

“We will not leave the protest sites until these demands are met. There will be a meeting of the farmers organization on Saturday and Sunday to build a consensus on the future of the movement and to discuss the MSP and other demands of the farmers. The final decision will be taken in the core committee meeting of SKM on Sunday.

Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been demanding the repeal of three agricultural laws – the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 – at the borders of the national capital since November 26 last year. , Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

In his address to the nation on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that three agricultural laws would be repealed in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.

Responding to the development, the farmers’ body said: “United Kisan Morcha welcomes the decision and will wait for the announcement to take effect through proper parliamentary procedures.”

“The farmers’ movement is not only for repeal of the three black laws, but also for a statutory guarantee of all agricultural produce and remunerative prices for all farmers. This important demand of the farmers is still pending.”

The SKM also emphasized that the demand to withdraw the Electricity Amendment Bill is still pending.

Claiming that around 700 farmers died during the protest, the farmers’ body said, “The insistence of the central government is responsible for these avoidable deaths, including the killings in Lakhimpur Kheri.”

Apart from repeal of agriculture laws, PM Modi announced that to take decisions on topics of promotion of zero budget based agriculture, to scientifically change the cropping pattern according to the changing needs of the country and to make MSP more effective. A committee will be constituted for transparent.

He said that the committee would have representatives from the central government, state governments, farmers, agricultural scientists and agricultural economists.
