Bihar CM Nitish Kumar takes a veiled swipe at INDIA bloc leaders at NDA meeting. BJP-led coalition gears up for Modi’s third term oath-taking

Taking a veiled jibe at the INDIA bloc leaders, JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar, while speaking at the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting on Friday, said that all those “here and there” who managed to win in the Lok Sabha polls this time will lose in the next election.

Newly elected MPs of the BJP-led NDA met today to elect Modi as their leader, paving the way for him to take oath as the country’s PM for a record third term. As the NDA leaders gathered at Parliament to name Modi as the alliance’s leader, Bihar CM Nitish pledged his support, saying that he and his party would always be with the NDA government.

‘Agli Baar…’

“…’Agli baar jab aap aaiye toh kuch log jo idhar udhar jeet gaya hai, agli baar sab haarega. Humko poora bharosa hai’…” Nitish Kumar said. “All the pending works of Bihar will be done. It is a very good thing that all of us have come together and we will all work together with you (PM Modi). You will be swearing in as the Prime Minister on Sunday, but I wanted you to do it today itself. Whenever you take the oath, we will be with you…We will all work together under your leadership,” he said.

Nitish’s Modi Gesture

Earlier today, when the NDA leaders started arriving at the central hall of the old parliament building for a parliamentary party meeting, the Janta Dal United (U) chief was spotted touching Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s feet, as a mark of respect. This key meeting comes ahead of Modi’s swearing-in which is scheduled to be held on Sunday. During the parliamentary party meeting today, senior members of the alliance like TDP’s N Chandrababu Naidu, JD(U)’s Nitish Kumar and Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde joined the PM for a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu to present her the list of parliamentarians supporting him.

The NDA has 293 MPs, comfortably above the majority mark of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha. Senior BJP leaders, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and J P Nadda, have also been holding talks with allies to work out an amicable formula for their share of representation in the new government. As the oath-taking ceremony for Modi’s third term approaches, speculation is rising over which important Cabinet berths will be allocated to BJP allies.

As the possible formula for Cabinet allocation within the NDA is being discussed, it’s being said that the BJP will retain the key ministries on Raisina Hill, including Home, Finance, Foreign and Defence. Key BJP partners — Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal (United) — are reportedly eyeing at least three to four Cabinet positions in the Union Council of Ministers.

Amid reports that INDIA bloc leaders also attempted to court Nitish, JD(U) advisor and party’s national spokesperson K C Tyagi on Friday said that the same INDIA bloc that had “refused” to make party supremo Nitish its national convenor, “has been now making offers to make Nitish PM”. He added they had rejected the offer outright and were strongly with the NDA. “Such is the game of politics that those who had refused to make Nitish Kumar INDIA bloc’s national convenor have been now making offers to make Nitish PM,” Tyagi was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
