After the takeover by the Taliban, Germany’s DW. Killed the relative of a journalist

BERLIN – Taliban fighters have shot dead a relative of a Deutsche Welle journalist in Afghanistan, a German public broadcaster has said.

DW said on Thursday that terrorists were conducting house-to-house searches for the journalist, who now works in Germany.

Another relative was seriously injured, but others managed to escape without giving details of the incident.

DW Director General Peter Limberg condemned the killing, which he said was a threat to media persons and their families in Afghanistan.

“The killing of a close relative of one of our editors yesterday by the Taliban is unimaginably tragic, and it testifies to the grave danger in which all of our employees and their families in Afghanistan find themselves,” he said.

“It is clear that the Taliban are already conducting an organized search for journalists in both Kabul and the provinces. we are running out of time!”

The broadcaster said the Taliban had raided the homes of at least three other DW journalists.

DW and other German media organizations have called on the German government to take swift action to help its Afghan workers.

After capturing Kabul, the Taliban began a public relations blitz, promising media freedom and pardons for all its opponents.

However, a confidential UN document seen by AFP said they were intensifying the search for people working with US and NATO forces.

Climate crisis and responsible journalism

As environmental reporter for The Times of Israel, I try to explain the facts and science behind climate change and environmental degradation – and to explain and criticize the official policies affecting our future, and Israel. To describe the techniques that may become part of the solution.

I am passionate about the natural world and am disappointed by the dismal lack of awareness of environmental issues shown by most of the public and politicians in Israel.

I am proud to do my part to keep the readers of The Times of Israel appropriately informed about this important topic – which can and does affect policy change.

Your support through membership in The Times of Israel Community, enables us to continue our important work. Will you join our community today?
