After the electoral debacle, BJP will focus on minority vote share to consolidate support in Bengal

Senior BJP leaders in West Bengal emphasized on a comprehensive grassroots strategy to capture at least 5% minority vote share in the state. Bengal BJP vice-president Pratap Banerjee and general secretary (organisation) Amitabh Chakraborty, among others, brainstormed about the party’s shortcomings in this year’s assembly elections at a ‘Minority Front Karyakarini meeting’ on Monday.

It was decided that the party would hold similar ‘minority front’ meetings every three months in all districts to prepare a road map on how to increase BJP’s presence among minority vote percentages. A mega membership drive for minorities will also be launched soon.

“Today’s ‘Minority Front’ meeting revolves around increasing the support base of the party among minorities in Bengal. We have decided to get at least 5% minority support base in Bengal. After the election, it was decided to help the victims of violence financially. So far four minority leaders have been killed (in the post-election violence) and several shops looted. A list of victims has been prepared after the elections and soon the financial assistance will be transferred to their respective bank accounts,” said a senior BJP leader.

With over 30% vote share, minorities (mainly Muslims) are certainly a deciding factor for any political party in the state to turn the tables.

In 1977, there was an anti-Congress wave and the minority vote for the Left helped them gain power. In 2011, the vote bank powered the Trinamool Congress, which brought Mamata Banerjee to the bastion and ended 34 years of Left rule in West Bengal.

In this year’s assembly elections, the minorities once again supported Banerjee and helped her win.

West Bengal has the second largest Muslim population in India, which is approximately 2.47 crores and constitutes about 27.5% of the state’s population.

After the recent defeat, BJP has realized that it is important to gain minority vote share to take on Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal.
