After teammates, sponsors drop Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood

All Mason Greenwood merchandise has been removed from Manchester United’s official website after the 20-year-old forward was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of rape and assault, following a post shared by his girlfriend Harriet Robson on social media.

Meanwhile, several Manchester United teammates, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Jesse Lingard, David de Gea, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Scott McTominay, unfollowed Greenwood on Instagram after the incident.

The 20-year-old’s sponsor Nike also expressed his concern about the allegations of abuse, and they have officially announced the suspension of Greenwood’s lucrative sponsorship deal.

“We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood. We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to monitor the situation closely,” Nike said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United shirt sponsor Teamviewer has indicated they are “monitoring incidents closely”, with another club partner at Cadbury refusing to have Greenwood’s image on their products.

The player, who remains in police custody pending an investigation, is facing criticism from frustrated fans who have asked the club to refund the money paid for his shirt.

Police were questioning Mason Greenwood on Tuesday morning on suspicion of rape and assault. Authorities were given extra time to talk to the Manchester United striker after Sunday’s arrest.

“Detectives have been given additional time to speak to a 20-year-old man suspected of raping and assaulting a woman,” said a statement from Greater Manchester Police.

“Interrogation is on and expert assistance is being offered to the victim. We remind people to refrain from sharing any comments or images that may compromise the victim’s right to lifelong anonymity, or may precipitate a live investigation with proactive action.”

“We are aware of the images and allegations circulating on social media. We will not comment further until the facts are established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind,” United said in a statement on Sunday. “

He later confirmed: “Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.”
