After Rohit Sharma’s confirmation as India T20I captain, his fans rejoiced on Twitter

While the confirmation of Rohit as the next T20I captain is an obvious choice, the decision has left his fans happy who have expressed their happiness with constructive and funny tweets.

The BCCI on Tuesday announced that Rohit Sharma will captain the Indian team in the three-match T20I series against New Zealand starting November 17. It marks Rohit’s official succession as captain in the shortest format Virat Kohli Relinquished T20I captaincy. Kohli has also been rested from the T20I series against the Black Caps.

With Rohit taking over from Kohli, KL Rahul has been named the new T20I vice-captain.

Notable inclusions in the 16-man squad are Venkatesh Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel, thanks to their IPL performances. Senior pacers Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested, while all-rounder Hardik Pandya failed to make room.

Apart from the three T20Is, New Zealand will also play two Tests against India during their bilateral visit which ends on December 7 in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, India failed to advance to the last four of the ongoing T20 World Cup due to losses against Pakistan and New Zealand in the first two matches. Considered an early favorite to win an ICC competition, India were handed a major defeat by Pakistan in their first match of the tournament on 24 October. Pakistan’s 10-wicket win ensured their first win over India in a World Cup match.

India finished the league stage of the T20 World Cup in third place in Group 2 behind Pakistan and New Zealand – both of whom made it to the semi-finals. The other two teams from Group 1 are England and Australia.
