VARANASI: After adopting a decreasing trend on Wednesday, Ganga again showed an alarming rise in water level in Varanasi on Thursday.
According to the daily bulletin of Central Water Commission Central Ganga Mandal (CWC), with the revival of the rising trend in the Ganges from Wednesday evening, it has crossed the mark of 67.69 metres. The speed of rise in water level is alarming according to the people on the ghats along the Ganges river, especially the boatmen and priests estimating that the river is rising at a rate of about 6 cm per hour. On Tuesday, the water level of the Ganga crossed the 67.54 meter mark and reached near the warning level of 70.26 meters, while the danger mark in Varanasi is 71.26 metres. But, the declining trend could not continue for long with the revival of the rising trend upstream at Phaphamau, Prayagraj and Mirzapur.
No major change has been observed in the water level of Ganga in Ballia and Ghazipur too, where Ganga crossed the danger mark (57.615 metres) on Wednesday.
Within a few hours of the water level receding, the trend of rising water level resumed, causing difficulty for people to reach the cremation ground. The venue of the daily Ganga Aarti was also changed and shifted upwards.
The low-lying areas along the Varuna River, a tributary of the Ganges, are prone to floods as it increases due to overflow in the Ganges. Despite the ban on boat operations by the district administration, police and Varanasi Municipal Corporation Some visitors tried to board the boats on Thursday morning, but were stopped by the police.
DM Kaushal Raj Sharma said that after making all the flood posts operational, other preparations have also been completed and flood relief work will be started as per the need.
