This is not the first time the music maestro has shown his allegiance to the Tamil language.

Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman recently tweeted a picture of a symbolic Tamil woman with a Dravidian language slogan. The tweet comes after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks that Hindi should be used as a communication language between states.

Despite not making any reference to the picture shared by Rahman late Friday night, Twitter interpreted it as a symbolic reaction to the home minister’s comments. The picture was shared over 20,000 times and the tweet garnered nearly 91,000 likes.

This is not the first time the music maestro has shown his allegiance to the Tamil language. Rahman made his passion for Tamil famous globally even when he collected the Oscar trophy for his composition in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ by announcing ‘Ela Pugazum Irivanukke’ (All Glory to God) in his mother tongue .

The music director’s post received mixed reactions, with Tamil supporters and people from other states opposing the Hindi imposition and praising him for his subtle yet powerful message. On the other hand, those who were in favor of Hindi were criticizing him, arguing that when he achieved fame through the production of some famous Bollywood music, they were now criticizing the same language.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu’s largest opposition party AIADMK on Saturday said people can learn Hindi on their own accord, saying it was wrong to impose any language. Former chief minister and AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam said the party stood firmly on the state’s two-language policy, which was Tamil and English.
