After England, Real Madrid players test positive under Spain’s football league Kovid shadow

Real Madrid said players Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio, Rodrigo, Andrey Lunin and an assistant coach have joined its group infected by the coronavirus outbreak. Luka Modric and Marcelo were the players who tested positive for Covid earlier on Wednesday.

Footballers in Europe have had a tough week as five English Premier League matches were also canceled due to rising cases of Covid-19 among players and staff.

“Real Madrid CF informs that our players Marco Asensio, Gareth Bale, Andrey Lunin and Rodrigo and our head assistant coach David Ancelotti have tested positive for COVID-19,” the Spanish club said in a statement.

With seven positive cases being reported within a week, Madrid’s game against Cadiz on December 19 is in doubt. However, La Liga rules state that if a team has 13 players and one goalkeeper available, the match can go on.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has issued a new set of COVID-19 protocols that will be followed in the coming days. In the 34-page document, the RFEF says players will have to undergo a PCR test every 15 days, while there will be no formal handshake before the match. The winter break will begin on December 22, 2021, following Madrid’s clash against the Athletic Club.

Meanwhile, six EPL matches have been canceled due to the increasing cases of Kovid-19 among players and staff.
