After a thumping victory in Punjab, will the AAP emerge from the underdog regional party to the BJP’s main opposition in the 2024 elections?

After securing a thumping majority in the Punjab elections, the Aam Aadmi Party has paved the way for the upcoming elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

The success of the party over the past 10 years has been a rollercoaster ride. AAP’s Punjab victory has fueled speculation that this Dalit regional party may make inroads in other states as well, and eventually become the dominant opposition in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

After its victory in the national capital, opposition parties assumed that the Kejriwal-led party would be confined to Delhi only, but the graph above AAP proved these aspirations wrong with its highly effective governance model and each passing With the elections, the party’s vote share has increased. ,

In Gujarat, during the 2021 municipal elections, AAP got 21% votes in Gandhinagar and 28% in Surat. The party is already leading in the Delhi municipal elections.

Elections in Gujarat are due in December this year. BJP and Congress have dominated Gujarat for decades, but some political experts say that the Aam Aadmi Party can give a tough fight to the BJP in the general elections.

AAP Gujarat spokesperson Yogesh Patel told PTI, “AAP will emerge as the main contender for BJP in Gujarat. People here have rejected Congress for last 27 years and voters are tired of BJP’s misrule in the meantime and will give a chance to AAP.

The AAP has also shunned itself in Haryana, where elections are due in the coming months. In the recent Chandigarh civic polls, the capital shared by Punjab and Haryana, AAP not only made a remarkable start but gave a tough fight to the BJP by winning 14 out of 35 municipal wards.

In an interview to Network18, AAP Punjab co-in-charge Raghav Chadha had said, “AAP will be a national party in the years to come. This is the first time that any party has won two states in such a short span of time. Even BJP failed to win any state for almost a decade after becoming a party.

Compared to the major parties, municipal elections may not be enough to come in a position to win, but they can certainly act as a strong base to garner votes in the upcoming state elections.

Taking inspiration from Modi’s Gujarat model, the Aam Aadmi Party has tried to make a name for itself in other states on the basis of ‘Delhi model’. If AAP gets overwhelming support in the upcoming Gujarat elections, the Kejriwal-led party can give a tough fight to the BJP in the 2024 elections. Aam Aadmi Party has a lot of work to do, but is this the beginning of change in Indian politics? Time will tell!
