Afghan diplomat accuses Ashraf Ghani of stealing $169 million, asks Interpol to arrest him

Moscow: Afghanistan’s ambassador to Tajikistan, Mohammad Zahir Aghabar, has accused Ashraf Ghani of stealing $169 million from government funds. He has asked Interpol to arrest Ghani on theft charges, Tolonews reports.

Ghani had left Afghanistan on Sunday when the Taliban arrived in Kabul and as of Wednesday there was no information about his whereabouts. The UAE later said it had accepted Ghani and his family into the country because of “humanitarian grounds”.

Ghani accused of stealing millions of dollars

Ambassador Mohammad Zahir Aghabar told a news conference on Wednesday that “Ghani stole $169 million from the state treasury” and called Ghani’s departure “a betrayal of the state and the nation”. At the same time, Ashraf Ghani gave a press conference and explained the reason for leaving Afghanistan and said that he left the country under compulsion.

Ghani also said that the allegations against him are completely baseless. I did not run away with money from Afghanistan, he said. He further added that cross-checking can be done from the customs department of UAE. I didn’t even have time to change my shoes, said Ghani. I was asked to leave immediately by my security forces. He also said that there would have been a massacre if he had lived in Kabul. He said he had left Afghanistan for security reasons.
