As Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge completed 26 years on Friday, director Aditya Chopra announced his Broadway debut. Titled ‘Come Fall In Love – The DDLJ Musical’, this Broadway production is being produced by Yash Raj Films. Aditya has been working on this passionate project for the past three years and has joined a wonderful, extremely diverse team that includes some of the best talent from Broadway and India.
The filmmaker feels strongly that Broadway and Indian films are ‘two long-lost lovers separated in time’ as their internal similarities both celebrate heartwarming stories and human emotion through music and dance. Huh.
Chopra, the musical will feature Lawrence Oliver Award winner Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde, Mean Girls), Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani as book and song composers. Tony and Emmy winner Rob Ashford (Frozen, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Boys from Syracuse) will choreograph with associate choreographer Shruti Merchant. The design team will also include set design by Emmy and Tony Award winner Derek MacLaine (Moulin Rouge!, Hairspray Live!, 33 Variations) and music supervision by Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner Bill Sherman (In the Heights, Sesame Street). , Hamilton). Adam Zotovich is the executive producer of the project.
Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ musical is set to hit the stage in the 2022-2023 Broadway season, with its world premiere in September 2022 at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego. Sharing his excitement about the project, Aditya Chopra said, “I am working on my most ambitious project till date. I am reuniting two long lost lovers, Broadway Musical and Indian Films. 26 years ago I started my career with a film called Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ, as it is more famously known). The film created history and changed the lives of mine and many others forever. But not many know that I never intended to make DDLJ in Hindi. Being heavily influenced by Hollywood and American pop culture as a 23-year-old young man, I thought I’d make some Indian films and then I’d leave for Hollywood and work with Tom Cruise for English-speaking audiences around the world. I will make DDLJ. my leading man. Obviously that didn’t happen. DDLJ released in 1995 and became the longest running film in Indian cinema. It gave me my identity and started an amazing journey for which I will be forever grateful.

But this time the medium is not cinema but theater. 26 years later I’ll be directing DDLJ again but this time as an English language Broadway musical for audiences around the world.
