Adinath Temple is located under Adina Masjid in Malda district of West Bengal, says BJP leader Rathindra Bose

The famous Adina Masjid in West Bengal’s Malda district, an ASI-listed monument, is located on top of the Adinath temple, state BJP vice-president Ratindra Bose said on social media.

“Adinath Mandir is sleeping under Adina Masjid. Jeetu Sardar gave his life to save this temple. That history is unknown to many. He was martyred while trying to protect the temple from British and Muslim rulers,” Bose wrote on Twitter. “This issue repeatedly came to my mind when I visited the disputed site yesterday along with local MLA Chinmay Deb Burman. Lord Vishwanath of Kashi got his place back. Is it Adinath’s turn now?”

The Adina Mosque was built during the Shah rule of the Sultanate of Bengal in the late 1300s. In addition, the exterior of the mosque has carvings of elephants and dancing figures. It was located in the historical city of Pandua, the former capital of the Bengal Sultanate.

Adina Mosque was commissioned in 1373. According to locals, materials from pre-Islamic Hindu and Buddhist structures were reused in its construction.

Experts say that the design of the mosque incorporated Bengali, Arab, Persian and Byzantine architecture.

Residents say that the region also has a mixed culture and that Hindus and Muslims co-exist peacefully. The fact that the mosque has used non-Islamic elements is well known to the people of the region.
