SAD leader’s convoy and gunman attacked by farmers

Clashes broke out between a group of farmers and some Akali Dal workers in Punjab’s Ferozepur on Wednesday after a protest against the visit of former Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur. Both the factions accused each other of firing and assault in the air. In this case, the police said that it is investigating the matter. The incident took place when Shiromani Akali Dal leader and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal had come here to participate in some programs to garner support for her party in the upcoming assembly elections. The farmers said that they wanted to meet the former minister but were not allowed to meet him.

At the same time some farmers stopped his convoy and attacked. Shiromani Akali Dal has also released a video of the entire incident, in which two protesters are shown sitting on the bonnet of a vehicle present in the convoy. One of the farmers reportedly fell from the vehicle and broke his ribs. Another purported video showed protesters attacking an SUV with a stick. On the other hand, the farmers allege that the Akali workers had fired a few rounds in the air, after which the farmers stopped their convoy.

‘An old habit of Congressmen to attack Akalis’

Bhartiya Kisan Union (Dakonda) president Buta Singh Burjil has said that this was another Lakhimpur-like incident in which SAD goons tried to crush the farmers. Many of our workers have been injured in this incident. We only wanted to ask a question to Harsimrat Kaur. Farmer leader Harnek Singh Mehma said that even when we were not allowed to ask questions to Harsimrat, the Yuva Akali Dal workers thrashed 2-3 farmers. Protesting this, we sat on a dharna. Harsimrat Kaur’s vehicle had already left the spot. We had stopped the vehicle carrying former SAD MLA Joginder Jindu. When two of us sat on the bonnet of the vehicle to stop them from going, they started driving their vehicle.

‘No information about such an incident’

SAD president Sukhbir Badal alleged that the Congressmen committed hooliganism on the behest of Congress MLA Parminder Singh Pinky. It is an old habit of Congressmen to attack the Akalis. This will not be tolerated. Congress MLA Parminder Singh Pinky said that Sukhbir Badal is making false allegations. People have rejected the Akalis.

On the other hand, Ferozepur SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans said, we have got information about one such incident, in which some protesters were sitting on the vehicle of the Akalis and the driver kept driving the vehicle for a long distance. He said that during this time an allegation of firing has also been made. The Akalis have complained about the attack on the vehicle. We are probing the matter. Condemning the entire incident, Harsimrat Kaur said, “Congress goons who came as farmers attacked and opened fire on senior leaders of Shiromani Akali Dal.”
