The total number of Puranas is 18 and the author of all those 18 Puranas is believed to be Maharishi Ved Vyas. He divided the Vedas, due to which he was named Vedavyasa. Ved Vyas ji is also called Adiguru, hence Guru Purnima is also known as Vyas Purnima.
