New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House was adjourned for the fifth time after resuming on Thursday morning as AAP and BJP councilors clashed amid heavy ruckus and sloganeering. According to visuals, the situation became so chaotic that the councilors started throwing ballot boxes into the well. Some could be seen pushing others while some fought. During the election of the members of the Standing Committee, there was a ruckus when the BJP alleged that the councilors were taking pictures of the ballot papers with their mobiles during the secret ballot, which is a violation of the secret ballot. Since then, the BJP has sought to nullify the votes cast and hold fresh elections.
While the House was adjourned, AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj hit out at the BJP and said, “BJP councilors are trying to postpone the standing committee elections. He further said, “The BJP deliberately wants to conduct the full standing committee election again. This way the process will never end. The MCD secretary has also said that they have only 245 ballot papers and we cannot conduct the full election again.”
Hitting back at AAP, BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla called it an “anarchist shrill party”. “AAP = anarchist shrill party. fear of defeat and cross-voting; You make every effort to bend the rules and laws! Earlier during the clash, Delhi Mayor Shaili Oberoi had alleged that BJP councilors had tried to attack her during the standing committee elections. As per the orders of the Supreme Court! This is the height of BJP’s hooliganism that they are trying to attack a woman mayor.

Later in the day, AAP candidate Aale Mohammad Iqbal was also elected as the new Deputy Mayor of Delhi. He was able to defeat BJP candidate Kamal Bagri. Got 147 votes as against 116 of Bagri.
The previous three attempts to elect a mayor failed due to political infighting between the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party. They met for the first time on 6 January, the second time on 24 January and the last time on 6 February. The municipal elections in Delhi were held on 4 December and the results were declared on 7 December. Aam Aadmi Party won 134 out of 250 seats.
