Over the past few months, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the Aadhaar issuing authority, has taken several steps to make the process operational. Indian Post Payments Bank (IPPB) announced that it is launching a service to update the phone number registered in Aadhaar through postman at the doorstep of the customer. Both the authorities have joined forces to offer this service which will enable postmen to facilitate the update process. IPPB said the service would be made available through an extensive network of around 650 IPPB branches and 146,000 postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS). These workers have been provided with smart phones and biometric devices which will enable them to perform these services at the doorstep of the Aadhaar cardholder, the ministry said in a statement. Apart from updating the registered phone number, this new service will also allow citizens to avail Aadhaar-related update facilities as well as a wide range of government welfare services.

This was announced by the Ministry of Communications in a tweet posted on its official Twitter handle on Tuesday. The tweet read: “Now a resident Aadhaar holder can get his mobile number updated in Aadhaar by postman at his doorstep. @IPPBOnline today launched a service to update mobile number in Aadhaar as Registrar of @UIDAI.

Speaking on the subject of mobile update services, Mr. J Venkataramu, MD & CEO, IPPB said, “Through Aadhaar the government has been able to reach out to crores of people and facilitate direct benefit transfer under various schemes like LPG. – PHAL, MGNREGS, etc directly into their bank accounts. With many other services like PAN, Driving License, EPFO ​​and subsidized ration linking with Aadhaar, updating mobile number in Aadhaar has become important for all citizens from the point of view of utility and security. UIDAI’s mobile update service through a ubiquitous and accessible network of post offices, postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks will help realize IPPB’s vision of serving underserved and unbanked areas and bridging the digital divide.

Currently, IPPB is only helping Aadhaar holders to update their numbers. It is expected that the organization will soon launch services to enable children to enroll for Aadhar card.

IPPB was set up under the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications with 100% equity owned by the Government of India. It was launched in September of 2018 as an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The primary objective of the organization is to remove the barriers of unbanked and underbanked people as well as the last mile reach. It aims to do this by leveraging a network of 155,000 post offices that are approximately 135,000 located in rural areas, with a staff base of 300,000 postal workers.
