Aadhaar Card Update: Step-by-Step Guide to Add or Change Mobile Number in Aadhaar

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Has made life easier for the average citizen by giving Aadhaar holders the option to update or link their mobile numbers online or offline.

Aadhaar holders who have not yet made changes in their cards will have to complete this update at the earliest. One of the main changes which is top priority- linking/registering or updating one’s mobile number. These changes are important to make as it allows citizens to avail benefits and schemes under Aadhaar, while also ensuring an additional layer of security.

Now with the recent changes, citizens can update or link the mobile number using the Service Update Portal (SSUP) or by visiting the local Permanent Enrollment Center. Aadhaar Enrollment Center. Here are the steps to keep in mind while changing mobile number, which falls under the demographic data set.

Perform mobile number change online

Phase 1: To update mobile number, visit the UIDAI web portal (ask.uidai.gov.in).

step 2: Input the phone number you want to update and type the captcha in the relevant box.

step 3: Click on ‘Send OTP’ option and enter the OTP sent to your phone number. Then click on ‘Submit OTP and Proceed’ option.

step 4: You will then see a dropdown menu that says ‘Online Aadhaar Services’ with myriad of options like name, address, gender, email-id, mobile number etc. Click on the one you want to update. In case of updating the mobile number, however, click on that option and then need to fill in the details accordingly and select the option ‘What do you want to update’.

Step 5: After submitting the mobile number, a new page will appear and a captcha has to be entered. After this an OTP will be sent to your number. Verify the OTP and click on ‘Save and Proceed’.

Step 6: Book an appointment online to visit the nearest Aadhaar center to pay the Rs 25 fee and provide any additional information that may be required.

Old-School Way; Offline update or linking of mobile number

To do it offline, one just needs to locate and visit the local Permanent Enrollment Center, fill up the Aadhaar Correction Form. In the same form, users have to mention the updated mobile number they want to link and update, after which the form has to be submitted. This will be followed by biometric verification for authentication.

The Verification Officer will then provide an acknowledgment slip containing the Update Request Number (URN). This number can be used to track the updated status of Aadhar card. Alternatively, to check the status, one can call the UIDAI toll-free number (1947).

If users only need to verify the number, then one just needs to log on to the UIDAI website and select the ‘Verify’ option under the ‘Aadhaar Services’ dropdown menu. A one-time 12-digit Aadhaar number has to be entered along with email details, mobile number and a security code. Once the OTP is received, click on the option ‘Verify OTP’ and a green tick should appear if all the steps are followed.

As an added layer to the process, Aadhaar holders can choose to link a specific telecom operator to link with the Aadhaar card through the mobile number.
