A Social Media Post, followed by Threats and Then a Murder: The Timeline of the Beheading of an Udaipur Tailor

Days after posting social media in support of suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma, two men slit the throat of a 20-year-old tailor, identified as Kanhaiya Lal, in broad daylight in Udaipur on Tuesday. Following the incident, local residents protested, internet services were suspended in the area and curfew was imposed. The accused arrested from Rajsamand filmed the incident and put it on social media saying that they are taking revenge for insulting Islam. Additional police force was deployed in the city even as Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot condemned the killing and appealed for calm.

According to the police, the accused had come to his shop on the pretext of giving the measurement of the cloth. As the tailor measured one of them – who later identified himself as Riyaz – the other attacked him with a cleaver. The other person also shot the murder on his mobile phone. Both the men fled the spot and later uploaded the clip on social media.


    In a video clip posted online, one of the alleged attackers announced that they beheaded the man and then threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he would get his knife. The attackers also indirectly mentioned Nupur Sharma.

    Tension escalated as the video went viral on social media. Shopkeepers in local markets downed shutters and stopped police from taking the body, saying they would allow it to be removed only after arresting the killers and giving Rs 50 lakh and a government job to the victim’s family.
