A Mini Reality Check for Young India, and the Problem of Plenty of Spin

India’s tour of Sri Lanka has come to an end, with India winning the ODIs 2–1 and Sri Lanka taking the T20Is by an equal margin. India began their tour with their second string squad, and by the time it ended, they were down for their third leg due to unfortunate COVID-related incidents in the camp. The tour ended with India scoring only 81 runs in the previous game, but there were a lot of positives and lessons to be learned from the six matches.

Not all pitches are flat

“I am not disappointed because they are young. They will learn and get better only if they are aware of these kinds of conditions and the quality of bowling. Sri Lankan team’s bowling attack is an international bowling attack. They would like to score some more runs. Their We now have an opportunity to reflect that not all wickets will be flat. We have to find ways to score and score 130, 140 runs on these wickets.”

Who can be better than coach Rahul Dravid to sum it up? At various points in the series, India’s batsmen struggled in tough conditions, especially when it assisted spin. It started with India scoring only 225 runs in the third ODI, with Spin taking six wickets. India had only five batsmen in the last two T20Is, but that should be no excuse for their performance, especially in the third game.

Players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devdutt Padikkal, Sanju Samson and Nitish Rana could not step up their game as Akila Dhananjaya and Wanindu Hasaranga created a web. India’s spin issues are now out in the open, and more are expected from the opponents in the T20 World Cup. In some ways, it is a mini reality check for many who thought that the depths of India were endless.

Captain Shikhar Dhawan started well but ended badly

This tour was going to be a big one for Dhawan as well. While there is no doubt about his ODI credentials, his place in the T20I squad is under question. He was not in the XI in India’s T20I series against England earlier this year. And with Virat Kohli announcing that he would open, there was pressure on Dhawan to make an impact.

Dhawan started the tour with an unbeaten 86 in the first ODI and ended it with a first-ball duck in the last T20I. There was some beginning in between but nothing special. Unless he has a tremendous IPL in the UAE, Dhawan could be down the pecking order for the T20 World Cup XI.

End of road for Sanju Samson?

Another player who came with great expectations was Sanju Samson. With Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant above him in the pecking order, Samson needed a very good series. But this was not to happen. He scored 46 runs in his only ODI but ended the tour with a nil like Dhawan. He seemed to have no clue while defending the spinners, and struggled against Wanindu Hasaranga.

For his entire class, Samson has been disappointing in this tour. Given the competition, it will be difficult for him to make it to the team.

Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav impress

The two will be flying to England soon but don’t be surprised if they are part of the T20 World Cup squad as well. Shaw started off with a bang in the first ODI, smashing the Sri Lankan bowlers. There were no big scores, but his intention and attitude at the top came as a refreshing aspect.

Suryakumar is in his zone full of confidence every time he bats. He was the Man of the Series in ODIs (his first ODI series). He scored a fifty in the first T20I before being forced to part ways. When most of the batsmen were struggling against the Sri Lankan spinners, Sky picked them up with ease.

Yuzvendra Chahal, Rahul Chahar, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakraborty. Each of them impressed in whatever opportunities they got, giving India a great headache ahead of the big tournament.

Coach Dravid refused to pick any particular spinner, insisting that he would not publicly name two options for the T20 World Cup squad. However, he was emphasizing on the options India had.

“We have a really good crop of spinners who are coming. It’s gratifying to see how our four spinners have performed and even the stand-by spinner Sai Kishore is a really good bowler.”
