Gautam Raju was born in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari District. He relocated to Hyderabad in pursuit of employment. His enthusiasm for performing also led him to strive to get a role in movies. In the movie Vasantha Geetam, starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao, he made his acting debut. He had a nice break later on, when he played in Sri Katna Leelalu, Coolie No1, Gharana Mogudu.
Gautam Raju dedicated himself mostly to the Telugu cinema film industry. His body of work is extensive, spanning more than 30 years. Subsequently, he also acted in films like Aalasyam Amrutam, and Jodi No1. In the 1990s, comedians like Gharana Mogudu, President Gari Pellam and Rajendra Gajendradu gained popularity. After this, he rose to prominence as the busiest actor in the 2000s, starring in roughly five to six films annually. He played the antagonist in the films Jai Sriram, Veyyi Abdalu, and Teja. Gautham Raju finally acted in the film Nato Nenu.
Gautam featured in Lakshmi Devi Samarpinchu Nede Chudandi (2017), directed by Jakee Atheek. Stars like Naresh, Aamani, Naga Babu, Gundu Sudharshan, Tirupathi Prakash, and Janani Reddy are among the cast members of the film. His son, Krishna Rao, also became a hero in the film industry. Following that, Krishna Rao produced a film under Gautam Raju’s independent production, titled Krishan Rao Supermarket. Oorantha Anukuntunnaru and Krishna Rao Supermarket are two of his 2019 productions.
