World number one Ashleigh Barty said it was ‘a little surreal’ after beating Danielle Collins in the final on Saturday night to win the Australian Open women’s title.

The top seed became the first home winner of the Australian Open since Chris O’Neill in Kuyong in 1978 after beating first Grand Slam finalist Daniel Collins 6-3 7-6(2) in Melbourne.

According to wtatennis.com, “it was a little surreal,” she later said. “I feel like I didn’t know what to do or what to feel, and I feel like I’ve been able to let out a little bit of emotion, which is a little unusual for me. Celebrating with everyone who was out there. To be able to be in the crowd, the energy tonight was incredible.”

“To be able to understand how much work I and my team have put in behind the scenes and over the years to get this opportunity to get to this point was really special. I think it was just a Kind of unfolded once—a really, really special moment,” she continued.

Barty’s Australian Open win is her third Grand Slam title after winning Roland Garros in 2019 and Wimbledon last year.

“I honestly thought how lucky I am to have found so many people here who love me for me, and experienced it with me. Because I was disappointed when mom and dad and some of my team couldn’t be there It happened in Paris and London.”

“I think it was really, really special to be able to have almost everyone here, and to be able to do it at home and to be able to do that with them was really special to experience with them. Yeah, mom is always going to be first. Was the one I hugged,” the world number one added.

The 25-year-old didn’t lose a set on his way to lifting the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup for the first time and extended his head-to-head record over Collins to win four of his five appearances.
